Tasting Notes
Society founder Pip Hills is marking the 40th anniversary of the club he formed with an updated edition of his book Maverick – The Founder’s Tale, which covers everything from the origins of The Scotch Malt Whisky Society, his exile in the mid-1990s and finally 'coming in from the cold’ five years ago. And, to make it even more SPECIAL, we are offering a bundle for €119 to own Maverick – The Founder’s Tale along with our Distillery No.1 bottle that commemorates Pip’s dram from a lemonade bottle that proved instrumental in setting up The Scotch Malt Whisky Society.
A deep russet colour greeted the Panel and prepared us well for the aroma, which was full of rich hazelnut spread, roasted chestnuts, serrano ham and cocoa powder. On the palate, Seville oranges and apricot chutney were followed by cinnamon swirls and swede nutmeg cake with a brown butter frosting. After reduction we discovered gingerbread and apple strudel, as well as marzipan covered in dark chocolate and filled with plum jam soaked in madeira wine. To taste, we found malted milk biscuits, cocoa pops and tonka beans, while in the finish there were toasted almonds and caramel millionaires’ shortbread. Following eight years in an ex-bourbon hogshead, we transferred this whisky into a first fill Spanish oak oloroso hogshead.
